Three to get ready

Today Fr. R's homily was about worries. He pointed out to everyone how much we worry. We all prepare ourselves for the next step in life. We are constantly preparing and worrying about how it will turn out. Everyone chuckled when he mentioned how we worry about preschoolers preparing for PreK. He said "How do you prepare for PreK?" His point was that we should quite worrying about the life to come and enjoy the place we are in. I have found myself pondering this exact topic earlier this week. These early years with my children are so precious. We are done with the baby phase. We are on to the next chapter. We are almost finished with the toddler phase too. Hard to believe how fast it can all go by. Thoughts like this helped make the decision whether or not to put Three in a young fives program next year. This will be her last year at home with me. Why rush her into school? Just let her be a kid and enjoy the time we have together. She will go to preschool three days a week. That is plenty and will give her a good foundation for Kindergarten.
Summer plans are sneaking onto the calendar. I am exited for summer. We need to get through spring break first. Looks like we will be skipping the MPLS area on this trip to MN. It is just easier to travel through the UP. It is Six's birthday. He really wanted to celebrate at the Mall of America. I haven't broke the news to him yet, but will need a good alternative option for his birthday. Who can beat MOA? Hopefully Grandpa has a few great ideas up his sleeve.

Names

Today I took down Fives alphabet letters that have been on the door to the basement for a year now. He didn't even notice. When I took them down, I had a thought about kids and names. I started to think how my children identify with their initial and name. Five really admires the upper case I and feels personal about it. I think giving children their own initials in the family can give them some security, confidence and independence. They find a way to relate to the letter when learning the alphabet. They admire the letter and take pride in knowing that is their letter. They learn the letters of their siblings and are eager to share their knowledge of others letters. This has been a discussion in our family many times over throughout the last few years. Your children learning letter recognition and the alphabet is a time to remember. We discuss who in our family starts with different letters. We start with immediate family, mom, dad and siblings. Then we move on to extended family and find who has letters in common with one another. Learning to write their names has been an adventure too. I noticed how Five wrote his name on the back of early letters. It was so fresh and new. Now he writes his name with confidence. Even though it is not always correct, the confidence can be seen with each letter. He changes it up frequently. Some days, he likes to write in all upper case letters. Other days, his s looks like a z. N suggested we just change the spelling for him. Some days the a's are lower case with tails on the wrong side. And every once in awhile, the c can be backwards. Even with all these flaws, I guarantee 90% of the time, he was completely confident in signing his name. Six had his fair share of issues too,but in the end I think he was thankful for only four letters. He always got the L right, but sometimes had issues with the K or E. Three is still learning. Some times her E looks more like a comb, an E with a few extra lines. She will also make a nice E that has lines extending almost to the other side of the page. If you have received letters from us, you may have seen this trade mark signature.
I am enjoying this time in my children's life. I know eventually, they will all write with complete confidence and not think twice about the letters. These early signatures are precious and will not be repeated in the years to come. I am happy they have identified with their letter and are enjoying learning so much.

Julie's Baby

I shared with the boys that Julie will find out what her baby is soon. We are all very excited. They then asked how her baby will get out. Oh what a question. They were happy with the answer that she will push it out. N said some docs have to cut them out. That was all there was for the discussion. They quickly moved on.
Finally, I was able to teach another German lesson to kindergarten and first grade. It was so much fun answering questions and sharing information. They loved it. Hopefully we have a quiet evening ahead of us, Nerf guns are out and they are all chasing each other, anything but quiet. N is trying to tell the boys not to mess with Princess Amadalla.

Tuesday after a holiday

With much protest, the boys got on the bus this morning. I was met with "Why do you only take us to school on bake sale days?" I would have taken them this morning, but roads were questionable. I needed extra time to get Three to preschool. During the preschool hours I hit the grocery store in almost record time, followed by a trip to Michaels and Kohl's. I am in love with the Paula Dean recipe books at Michaels. I got one for N's mother for her birthday and thought it was just great. Spring is always such a busy time for us. Next week we have three birthdays. The following week, Auntie J and then me. 32, can you believe it? I remember when the characters on Friends were turning 30. They didn't seem old, but hard to imagine myself being that old. Our neighbors are celebrating 37 years of marriage today. They are such great people too, good role models for the rest of us. So many marriages are in trouble, its nice to see such success.
Have to get my birthday gifts ready and to the post so they arrive on time. April will be here before we know it and that means N and Six have birthdays. We will be on spring break at the time and hopefully in MN! Have to get those plans figured out. Maybe include a baby shower???
Three wanted to bake an apple pie today. Me, trying to be as accommodating as I can, wound up making two. So, come over and get some. I can't have two pies sitting here. Fresh whipped cream from the dairy too! Doesn't get any better than that. Oh, plus it is Friday for N! Let the good times roll!

Holiday Holiday

We spent the entire day at home. The boys never got dressed. I tried to talk them into going outside, but they didn't go. I shoveled the street around the mailboxes, enough of a workout for me for today. We rearranged the furniture in the girl room. She was thrilled. When N came home, we continued on the same relaxing path as we had all day. We had breakfast for supper and everyone was pleased. N's parents had picked up some cream from a dairy for us. We still had unfrosted cupcakes from the bake sale. A little cream and we had a very popular bedtime snack.
We were trying to decide to speed up our internet. Switching providers means signing a new contract, something N is not crazy about. This brought up the topic of commitment and buying a house. Oh how I wish we could buy a house. Oh how I wish we did not have the house in TX anymore. Oh how I wish Freeland were in MN. It's hard to want so badly to be settled, but not be able to execute that task.
Well, they are all still awake. Not even sure why I am doing this know. Will continue that thought later...

Holiday

Today is a day off from school. Had it not been a holiday, I am sure it would have been a snow day. Both boys were up right away and off to play. The girl slept in until 8:30! Five comes in asking me to help him put on his socks. Of course I don't do it exactly right and get told so. If he would take off his gloves and Iron Man arm cover he could do it himself, the way he likes. Oh well. He will figure it out. I am so thankful for our basement. It is their area, their place to be. With carpet down there, it is much warmer and more comfortable to play. I wish we could do more down there, but being renters sort of limits us. I have so many ideas for building projects, but need a lesson on power tools. I want a puppet theater. We have so many puppets, but no theater. We might have to get creative today. We had a play date scheduled, but was canceled due to illness. The boys were so excited too. So, another day at home. Guess I will get my work out done and maybe rearrange some furniture.

Sewing Project

Here is the latest sewing project. I made this for our one year old neighbor for his birthday. So excited to make more. The bottom pockets are his dads.

Good Times with The Cousins

We finally were able to get all the grandkids in N's family together on Saturday. They had a blast. I made chili and his parents brought a bunch of appetizers. Of course at the end of the day, none of our kids wanted to go home. We got to meet the newest member of the family, little Nine. He is sweet and seems to be a pretty good baby. Seven and Eight have grown so much and are hilarious. They recently got a three child stroller, but were unsure how to take it apart/put it together. N helped figure it out. Eight was so thrilled to sit in the stroller in the living room. I asked him to smile for a picture and he gave me the cheesiest smile!

Final Bake Sale Complete!

We had the last bake sale of the year this morning. The kids had so much fun. I love going to the school. My voice was virtually nonexistent, but I managed. I haven't been sick like everyone else, just my voice disappeared. I admit, I was awake last night, thinking about the bake sale tomorrow. Not sure why, they always go well. Five was so happy to see me. He gave me a couple hugs. When he left, I told him to have a good day. He said to me "I hope you have a good day too." Just a sweetie. I miss him already. It wasn't until I got home that I realized I didn't even see Six when his class came. Feeling guilty, Three and I brought him a shake for lunch. I think we are all off slightly from so many confusing nights. I feel like I have forgotten many things and just can't get it all straight. Looking forward to the long weekend to get back to normal. Still unsure of our plans for N's day off tomorrow. Doesn't really matter I guess, as long as everyone is happy and healthy.

Back to School, finally

Brought the boys in for a half day today. I think they are good to go. They still have coughs, but are on day 3 of antibiotics. The girl went to preschool with much enthusiasm today. No worries about missing the valentines party. I think she was thrilled to be the boys parties instead.
Bake sale tomorrow, gotta get baking. Five wants peanut butter cookies. Six wants chocolate cupcakes. We will see how much I can get done. Feel like I need to recover from the sickness myself.
N has a Saturday off! This never happens. I heard a rumor we might meet his parents somewhere. We will see. He started model airplanes with the boys. Six was thrilled. He can't wait to finish it, but it will take time. The book I have been reading shows a relationship of a family and it doesn't go well for the father and son. I found myself thinking of our family dynamics and how N and Six are. Six is interested in many things N is, but not too much on the fishing part. N is always trying to get them to go with him, but they never want to go. At least they share a love for airplanes and Lego's.

Not much sleep, not much motivation

It is so hard to get moving after a rough night with everyone up, but at different times. N got up with Three first, I took the boys shifts later. They are better today, but after such a horrible night, there was no way they could go to school. Maybe after lunch, but that might be when the tiredness will hit. It is beautiful outside today. Really wish I could get out and organize the garage, but I am half way through my first cup of coffee and all I want to do is curl up in my bed with my new book. Had every intention of exercising after cleaning up downstairs, but am failing in that area too. Maybe I should go back outside? Or maybe I should just take a walk this afternoon by myself? Oh, never thought of that until now. It's so nice out, guess that will be my afternoon plan.
I sprayed the couch with Lysol and vacuumed downstairs. I washed all the blankets they used yesterday and cleaned the bathroom.
I hear the kids looking at old pictures we found last week. It is great to hear their comments since the pictures are from a few years ago. They sure do miss seeing their cousins.
N is home today, we will see where the day takes us.

Sick Days of the week

Three is better after a full day of antibiotics. Both boys started taking them today too. Poor Five. What a nightmare last night was for him, literally. He was sick and crying, but not awake. He was sleeping, yet convinced something was stuck up his nose. We needed to pop it or get it out. It took a long time to wake him up enough to get some medicine in him and calmed down. Good thing N and I went to bed at 9:30. This all happened at 11, which felt like 3 am to me. No worries, I saw 3 am too. It was a long night of running from room to room, trying to reassure and meet their needs so N could get some sleep. He had an early shift today. Morning came soon enough for him. So thankful the Doc didn't make me bring all three in. The Angel next door picked up their medicine and some Jello from the store for us. We didn't have to leave the house for the medication after all. The rest of the day has been about Star Wars and books. Red soup and grilled cheese for lunch, we are on the road to recovery. Thankfully N gets home early tonight. Hoping everyone feels better, well enough to return to normal tomorrow. We will see.

One girl had a frilly skirt with 100 sequins. A boy had 100 silly bands pinned to his shirt. It was a fun day for all the kids. Five came home with an autograph book of signatures of people in the building.

Valentines Day, normally not a favorite holiday of mine.

Over the years, there were many Valentines Days where N and I were not together. It all started that first year we met, he was shipped off to Alabama for officers school and we missed our first Valentines. The second was also missed since I was still in North Dakota and he in Mississippi. From then on, just wasn't a favorite holiday of mine. Never got excited about it, etc.
Our children on the other hand, love a party any day of the month. I stopped by Five's classroom to give him is BIG KIT KAT for Mr. L. They were having a swinging time in the kindergarten hallway. With Three along, we had a short greeting and headed to the first grade hallway. We brought Valentine punch to the party. Some liked it, some did not. Good thing I brought apple juice as a back up. Three and I conducted the heart game. It was fun. I really enjoy being with the kids. Once Mr. T gave directions on which game I was helping with, someone asked if it was in German. Tomorrow I get to go and do a German activity with them.
After school, N was waiting with Five. He brought home steak and shrimp, plus mushrooms and Caesar salad. It was a great way to spend our Valentines. Kids ate later and are now getting ready for bed. Three has been sick. I took her to the Dr. today. She is on amoxicillin for seven days. Hoping to keep the boys healthy. They have a little congestion, but no fever. Mussinex and Zyrtec for them and maybe the infection will stay away. Happy Valentines readers!

Michigan's Little Bavaria

N and I went to Frankenmuth alone. Zinnia to the rescue. I was so thankful when we were there. After being sick, they would not have done well. It was also late when we left and would have been tired for school tomorrow. She called just as we were loading them into the car.
We met with this family who has a daughter wanting to get into the AF Academy. We had a nice dinner with them and N was able to share his experiences. I think he was able to give her some input on what life would be like if she went there.
Before meeting them, we had a beer upstairs. Best Valentines gift N could have given me. It was from the tap and a good German beer. Really wish we could visit Germany. I love going there, and so do my kids. Looking forward to some summer days on the streets of Little Bavaria. Not quite as good as the real thing, but close.

100 Pins/Buttons

I will post a picture of the cape. He is thrilled. We had to borrow many. We want to start our own button collection for the kids. Grandma sent some and they were perfect! One is of Uncle D when he was little. They loved that one. I have a plastic shoe box tote to put them all in. This will be our first collection. We plan to add to the 100 postcard collection too. I am going to put them in a tote also and we will see where the cards come from. If you would still like to add to our collection, the kids will be happy to make additions. I can email you our address if you like. : ) Thanks to all those who helped and wanted to help. Monday is the big day, I will post the picture then.

What a day, hard not to be depressed.

I subbed today and it went well, but was I exhausted. Only to return home and find out I have a sick child. Poor girl. Fever and cough. Got Five to get his haircut. Thankfully our wonderful neighbor stayed with Three so I could finally get the haircut task accomplished. This is the third weekend in a row with sick kids. The last two weeks it was a stomach bug. We were supposed to escape to the little German town in the area on Sunday. I know how it will turn out, N will go, maybe with a boy or two and I will be stuck at home. So frustrating. Still have to make supper. Good think we have no where to go tomorrow. Won't have to cancel any great play dates like last weekend. And to wrap it up, I now know two moms who's husbands left them. I feel so bad for them and wish there was more I could do. Oh how the winter drags on and when will we see more sun? I sure will be keeping them in my prayers.
So, my time is up. I better feed the troops and get things straightened out downstairs. Another exciting Friday night.

How do the working moms do it?

Granted, my day began with a migraine, but after subbing a half day, I am spent. What a class of second graders this was! They are so very chatty, I was shocked. It was hard to keep their attention focused on what we were doing, etc. Tomorrow will be a challenge and ALL day! I have papers to correct tonight. The teacher, who is fantastic, had surgery and was out for the week. The sub they had earlier this week had her grandfather pass away today. She couldn't stay on for today and tomorrow. They called me. The sub from earlier in the week did not correct any papers thus the reason I brought them home.
I can't figure out how the working moms do this all week long. Hats off to them. I know staying home isn't easy either, but it takes motivation to go to work, come home and keep up with everything in the house. I am lucky. N had food cooking when we walked in the door. The house isn't too bad, but thanks to Auntie J who sent paints for Valentines, no homework has been done yet. Somehow that went the wrong direction. PS Auntie J, the paints weren't the easiest to get open and I sprayed purple on my brand new white shirt. I'll let you know if it doesn't come out.

Wednesday Lunch

Each week I try to give them some variety with their lunch choices. Not much, but some. I let them choose one day for hot lunch. The other days of the week they bring cold lunch. Sometimes I surprise them with a lunchable. Today was a lunchable day. Little did I know, Six had made arrangements of his own with his dad. N promised a fish sandwich for lunch. We brought him the sandwich this afternoon. Not sure how Five will feel about that, we will find out. He has had lunch before with Three and I without us going to see Six too, but never have we given one McDonald's and not the other.
Still preparing for 100 days of school day and Valentines. Need to get the valentines done and purchase supplies for punch for the party. Three is thrilled she gets to go help at the party. We will see how that turns out. In all of Six's class, only two parents volunteered to help. His teacher is really organized and runs a tight ship. I am sure it will be fine even with only a couple extra helpers.

100 Days of School

On Valentines the children will celebrate 100 days of school. They will begin the morning by each bringing 100 pieces of their favorite cereal and eating together. First grade has been instructed to wear 100 of something. Somehow, we came up with buttons. Well, we do not have 100 buttons. We are close to 30. I think of all the buttons in the past that I have parted with, no clue where they are today. We will see if this will work. Kindergarten is supposed to bring 100 things that fit into a nice small paper bag. 100 post cards should be easy enough for that. I think. We have less than a week. I hope we can get it together. Six is so excited. We are pinning them to a black cape for him to wear. He has a pin N got from the Secret Service, some from the Air Force and I even added some UND pins. I have some from Germany and Italy too. I hope we can get 100 and write about where each pin came from. We even found three that are pictures of the kids from Halloween 2008.
If you can contribute to our cause, I will send you our address. Thanks, the boys greatly appreciate it.

Sick Days

First it was Three who was sick last week. Wouldn't you know, getting ready for church, Five says his tummy hurts. No church for us. No play date either. Poor Five spends the day sick on the couch. He took a late nap and was better after. He had two Popsicles and enjoyed watching his movie from the movie store. I put the other two to bed and gave Five a bath. After I laid with him on his make-shift bed on the floor. (When ill, I don't want him up on the top bunk.) He loves to hear about Texas. I told him when he was just one day old a lady came to my room to take his picture. He cried and cried. I put my hand on his cheek and ran my finger up and down. The lady commented on how he liked that and he had stopped crying right away. Poor Five was so ill all day. He sweet little face looks up at me and and with a soft voice says "I still like it."
He was recovered this morning, but needed a day off. There was no way I could rush him out the door on time. Six knew he had to go to school. Wouldn't you know, we went through the entire morning routine and just before getting dressed for the bus, he says his tummy hurts. Flashes of Five being sick yesterday go through my head. I let him stay home. I fear him getting sick on the bus or at school. Well, the first hour goes by and he is not sick. Guess he snuck a day off.
Even with having everyone at home, I was determined to get something accomplished. Our group activity was cleaning the junk drawer. They were excited for the task and eager to see what treasures we would find. Five wanted to clean out the drawer and use if for something else. Everyone helped. In the end, we had four big bowls full of different things. One bowl for N, which was full of nails, screwdrivers and various fishing accessories. Another was for me, ribbons and anything to do with crafts. Of course there was a bowl full of toys. You name it, puzzle pieces, Lego's, fish, anything and everything. The Fourth bowl was crayons and markers. We got out a money jar for the change and everything else went on the counter. It was quite an undertaking. Once finished, they were amazed. Five thought it would be a great place to keep their Nerf guns. They fit and were easy to access. Leave it to Five to come up with a suggestion like that.
I sorted through more totes and made more garage sale progress. Three found more things for Auntie J's baby. I was discussing this with a friend on the phone and just happened to mention that it might be a boy. Three interrupts and says with great confidence, she thinks it WILL be a GIRL. We then went through totes of dresses and clothing for Auntie J's baby.
Well, I can hear the Lego's rattling. Perhaps the boys need a reminder that it is indeed bedtime.

Five and Six

Today at breakfast, Five was trying to explain something he had discussed with Six in MN. We did not understand when he was talking about since he said it was at the 7 hotel. There is no 7 hotel, it's an 8. We stayed at a Days Inn with a sun on our way home from MN. Then he mentions this was on the lazy river. Oh, there is a 7 hotel; Seven Clans Casino Hotel. Gotcha Five!
For Christmas, G & G gave everyone new pajamas. Six decided that the star wars pj's would only be for Saturday mornings when he can stay in them "all day." True to his word, he will only wear them on Saturdays or snow days.
We have to find 100 things to wear to school on Valentines day. It will mark 100 days of school. They are to bring 100 pieces of their favorite cereal and will eat breakfast as a class. I started searching through boxes for different items for the 100 things to wear. We have a number of pins, some belong to N, some me. I wanted to get a collection together and put them on something the boys can wear. Found some motivation after all! I also found things from Germany, Italy and Poland. I want to get them together to take to school to share with the kids. I have more things to find, we will see if the motivation continues.

Once again, no motivation

I have the basics done. N woke me up early. I stayed up late waiting for him to get home from work. Even discussed with the boys of letting us sleep in. Sleep in, it's nonexistent for me. They are watching cartoons and eating cereal. I have no motivation to cook. I started a load of laundry. I worked out, but only 1 mile. Lost motivation. Oh what will our day be like? No plans and nowhere to go....hopefully we can come up with something to get us going. I should go back to bed, but that never seems to work out either. I hate to sound like such a downer. We just had so much time at home this week. My migraine is gone for the most part, but I know as soon as I say this, it will return. The chances are high since my sleep pattern wasn't on target last night. Stayed up too late and woke up too early, not an acceptable combination.

How to get things done

Mr. C from next door knows how to get things done. The neighbors worked hard to clear the driveways, then the snowplow comes through and shoves a think mound of snow right in the exit of our homes. Talk about frustrating! I had this discussion with Mr. C when we got home from school. Less than an hour later, the maintenance guy was plowing Mr. C and the neighbor's driveway clear. I never would have considered calling the landlord. Kudos to Mr. C!
I subbed for special ed today. I had never been in that room before. It was nice and fun. I was able to work one on one with many kids. I got to know the girl who bit Five a few months ago. I can't remember if I blogged about it, it was in October I think. She came into Five's classroom and walked right up to him and bit him. Mr. L called me to tell me what happened. I went to check on him about an hour after it happened and he was fine. She is a sweet girl, but the paras said they need to keep her away from the other kids. One boy almost had a melt down over having to get creative with a story. I had subbed for his class twice in the last two weeks. Once given a direction that tied his interest to it, he was able to write eight pages! And to my surprise, the story was quite funny. I enjoyed helping him through that difficult time and seeing the results in such a positive way. When he was done he put up his had at me for a high five without saying anything. It was sweet. Another boy came in and directly to me asked where his teacher was and who I was. I told him and he gave me a little pat/rub on my shoulder saying he was happy to have me there. I worked with him throughout the day too. Another boy doesn't talk. I remember seeing him during the bake sale. He was wandering the halls, but could not tell us where he belonged. I worked with him on a short story. It was supposed to be 2-3 sentences about anything he liked. The other teachers told him he had to talk to me in order to do the assignment. I got the first sentence "We played in the snow." (Yesterday on the snow day.) But the second sentence, I had a hard time understanding. He was saying something about playing a game, but it sounded like something to do with someone named Kim. In the end we figured it out and he completed his work. What an adventure. The teacher I subbed for came at the end of the day. I guess she was at a workshop and then meetings all day. I thanked her for the experience and told her how much I enjoyed my day. I have seen her in the hallway many times, but never with a smile on her face. She really lit up when I told her how great it was to be there. She is really good with the kids too.
On another note, it is amazing how small the world can be sometimes. Would you believe I had a conversation with a para that started out about Oklahoma and led to learning she was from North Dakota? She knew every place I mentioned. It was fun to know there was a connection to "home" around here. Not that she is from my hometown, but just that she knew the town my grandparents live in and even knew my hometown was kind of fun. She goes to our church too. Guess we will have a different greeting next time we see each other.
Still, another note, just as we left the school the emergency vehicles pulled up to the doors we had just come out of. The buses had already left and Zinnia and I were exchanging children. Nothing seemed to be happening when we left, but by the time we got home, we could hear the ambulance arriving somewhere in town. It had to have been the school. It got me thinking how many people I have come to know and care about were in that building at that exact moment. After the death of Father Larry, I can't imagine how we would feel if something like that happened to another new friend in town. I pray for who ever it was and that it all turned out OK in the end. We have come to really enjoy this small community. Once again, it is bitter sweet. As much as I love it here, it still makes my heart ache that we are not closer to home.
And so, that is the end of another week for our family. Tonight, its just the kids and I. I hope to find something to do tomorrow, or it might make for a very long weekend. Two snow days followed by only one day of school might be tough since we did nothing those snow days. We do have great plans for Sunday following mass. The boys have been counting down for Sunday to get here.

Snow Day

We shoveled ourselves out from our biggest Michigan snow storm yet. The kids were thrilled there was not school on Wednesday, but especially thrilled when they canceled it for Thursday as well. They stayed in their pj's all day. I managed to get the floor washed and the bathroom clean, but that is all the productive I could be. N made lunch and supper. Baths and we were ready for bed. Today they plan to make an igloo in the back yard. N isn't moving very fast this morning, which there is no hurry. We will see how the building goes.
The dreaded migraine has returned and I will be on minimum maintenance today as well.
